The Tobacco to Bamboo project has been implemented in South Nyanza province, Kenya’s most important tobacco growing region.[1] Between 2006 and 2012 the project supported tobacco farmers to switch to bamboo as an alternative crop to tobacco. Four cooperatives have been created to provide agricultural training and technical assistance.  The project provided training on how to process bamboo into furniture, household-utensils or jewelry by using simple hand-tools. Bamboo products can fetch prices up to ten times higher compared to tobacco. The plant also helps restore soil fertility.
