The majority of Kenyan tobacco is produced in Migori county, one of the poorest counties in Kenya and the second most food insecure county in Nyanza Province. Concerned by farmers’ welfare, deforestation and soil degradation in the area, the Migori county government has started funding alternative cash crops for farmers. The county government purchased seeds for over 5000 farmers to start maize and rice farming in 2014. The government also announced it would subsidise the purchase of fertiliser for the new crops as well as provide assistance to restore the health of soils that had been damaged by the chemicals used in tobacco growing. Potato, sorghum and cassava are other crops, which are being promoted as alternatives to tobacco in Migori County.
